Structure and membership

In September 2004 the steering group completed its work and made recommendations concerning the role, remit, working structure and membership of the Arts Commission.  The Arts Commission will work at arm’s length from the council.  The independence of the Arts Commission is key to its success and credibility.

The Arts Commission is made up of around 30 individuals including 6 cross party councillors.  The members have been proposed by the steering group to represent the different parts of the arts and creative industries sector in the city.  The commission will meet quarterly with the majority of its work being delivered by a series of Sub Committees and Working Parties.

Membership of the Arts Commission is limited to a 2 year period with an expected minimum commitment of 6 months.  The Arts Commission is able to invite individuals or organisations who are not members to attend meetings when appropriate for a particular purpose.  In the longer term, membership will be at least partially elected by open nomination via this website.

The story so far

The Arts Commission meets four times a year.  Working parties established by the Arts Commission meet outside these times and report back at the main meetings.  During 2005/2006 the main Urban Culture Programme, making a difference, has been one of the Arts Commissions main areas of responsiblity.
